Abstract

1,003,892. Covers for vehicles. J. VAILLANT and A. VAUGOYEAU. April 27, 1962 [May 3, 1961; April 13, 1962], No. 16190/62. Heading B7L. A railway vehicle sliding roof comprises a plurality of corrugated panels 1 connected in a row by elastic hinges 2, Figs. 1, 2, 4, spaced lateral guides, Fig. 5, on which sliding strips 15, 19 on the panels engage, and side rails 24 receiving guide rollers 22 on rods 20 passing through alternate hinge holes 6, the rails being downwardly extended beyond the guides at one end so that the panels may be collapsed by hand-driven chain gearing into a zig-zag stored formation in a housing 25, Fig. 2. The foremost panel only of the series is provided with guide rollers 22 at its four corners, and this panel is connected by chains 27 at each side to sprocketwheels 28, 29 connected through further gearing and a chain drive to operating handles at one end of the vehicle. Fig. 3 (not shown). The orifices 6 in the hinges which are not required to contain rods 20 are filled with sponge rubber, and water obtaining entry to the guides and side rails is drained away through holes 41, Fig. 5. In order to overcome resistance to movement of the panels under elastic cushions 17 and friction surfaces 18 to a roof closed position, guides 42 are provided with an endless chain of links and rollers 45. Locking bolts 46 operated by levers 47 at each side of the vehicle may be passed vertically through the foremost panel 32 to hold the panels in a closed position. The forward edge of the housing 25 is provided with a scraper blade to remove snow adhering to the panels. A modified form of hinge is illustrated in Fig. 7 (not shown).
