Abstract
1,003,647. Breathing apparatus. SIEBE GORMAN & CO. Ltd. Oct. 31, 1963 [Nov.13, 1962], No. 42799/62. Heading A5T. A closed circuit liquid air or liquid oxygen breathing apparatus comprises a canister 12 containing a cartridge 9 or carbon-dioxide-absorbing material 15, and united to housing 2 containing liquid oxygen or air container 3a, to form a unitary casing, breathing bag 5 being detachably connected to the housing 2. Cartridge 9 comprises outer shell 9a and inner tube 14, between which the material 15 is packed. Cartridge 9 is connected via boss 19b to junction 8, which carries disc 20 and sealing 20b to seal the canister 12 from the intake of cartridge 9. Container 3a has a circuitous flow path 3c to outlet 3b. On exhaling, exhaled air passes from mouthpiece 6 through exhalation valve (not shown), junction piece 8 and boss 19b into tube 14, from where it passes through material 15 and cartridge shell 9a into canister 12. The air, on passing through material 15, absorbs heat and the hot air passes from canister 12 through outlet 11, around space 10 surrounding container 3a such that it vapourises the liquid oxygen or air, and then into breathing bag 5, where it mixes with fresh air or oxygen entering the bag from container 3a. On inhaling, the mixture passes from bag 5 through space 10, inhalation tube 26, tube 13 and inhalation valve (not shown) to mouthpiece 6. Specification 976 768 is referred to.
