Abstract

A hand device for cutting vegetables, fruit &c. into bars or small pieces, e.g. cubes, comprises a U-shaped frame-piece having a grid top 20 with spaces 21, and sides 10, 11 with recesses 9 detachably accommodating frames 8 surrounding grid knives 1, 2, 3 and 4, 5, 6, spaces 19 between each grid accommodating knife 29 on a further U-frame 26, 27, 39, Fig. 3, fitted to the assembly by dovetails 24, 25 on sides 26, 27 being received into matching recesses 22, 23 in the sides 10, 11. In operation, Fig. 1, the operator pushes the grid assembly (without the separate knife frame fitted) on to an onion 44 on a supporting surface 45 and the cut bars of onion fill the grid spaces 7. The assembly is then placed on its side, Fig. 2, so that the flat wall 32 of frame 10, 11, 20 is supported. The knives 29 are then pushed vertically downwards into the spaces 19 to cut the bars of onion into cubes. With knives 29 withdrawn the grids are then collectively or individually rapped to remove the cubes but if desired a set of ejecting plungers (Fig 4, not shown) may be used for this purpose. In an embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown the cutting grids, cubing knives, ejector plungers, and a lever/pusher plate device for forcing the onion into the grids, are all operatively mounted together on a single frame.
