Abstract

The invention comprises esters of dicarboxylic acids having the general formula RO.CO(Z)nCO.OR1 in which R and R1 are nitrosubstituted alkyl groups having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, the nitro substituent being attached to a carbon atom other than that bonded to the carboxyl group, Z is a divalent hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms an n is 0 or 1. The esters are prepared by treating the acid halide with one mol. of an alcohol ROH and then one mol. of an alcohol R1OH. The alcohols may be the same or different. Z may be acyclic or carbocyclic. U.S.ASpecification 2,846,398 is referred to.ALSO:Fungicidal compositions contain as active ingredient an ester of the formula:- RO. CO (Z)n CO. OR1 in which R and R1, which may be the same or different, are nitrosubstituted alkyl groups having 2 to 6 carbon atoms, the nitro substituent being attached to a carbon atom other than that bonded to the carboxyl group, Z is a divalent acyclic or carbocyclic hydrocarbon group containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms and n is 0 or 1 together with a carrier. The compositions may be in one of the following forms-(a) a solution in an organic solvent (b) a suspension or emulsion containing a surface active compound (c) dissolved or suspended in a semi-solid e.g. soap or ointment base (d) mixture with a solid carrier (e) as an aerosol. The compositions may contain other pesticides e.g. insecticides, nematocides, bacterocide and herbicides. U.S.A. Specification 2,846,398 is referred to.
