Abstract
In a method and apparatus for the continuous heat-treatment of metal strip, the latter is raised to the treatment temperature by passage through a liquid heat transfer medium, e.g. lead-bismuth alloy, maintained at that temperature in a non-oxidizing atmosphere and quenched in a liquid heat transfer medium. A single liquid medium may be used, being circulated from the quenching to the heating zones in counter flow to the strip and being <PICT:1003259/C6-C7/1> heated during its passage from the former to the latter zone. The strip may be maintained at the treatment temperature by radiation or by direct resistance heating. As shown in Fig. 1, strip 11 passes through limbs 14, 16 of a U - shaped vessel containing the heating medium, where it is heated to the desired temperature, and then through chamber 17 where it is maintained at temperature by radiant heaters 18 or by passage of current introduced through rollers 19, 21 &c. The strip then passes through limbs 20, 22 of a second U-shaped vessel forming the quenching zone, and leaves by way of heaters 24 and pinch rolls 25. The liquid medium is circulated as shown by pump 42, a heater 60 being interposed between limbs 16 and 20. Specification 980,353 is referred to.
