Abstract
The invention relates to alkylsulphates of tetracycline in which the alkyl radical contains from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, e.g. methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butyl-sulphates of tetracycline. The alkylsulphates of tetracycline are prepared by (a) reacting tetracycline base with an alkyl sulphuric acid obtained by treating an alkali metal or ammonium alkyl sulphate with a cationic ion exchange resin; or (b) reacting tetracycline sulphate with an alkaline earth metal alkyl sulphate in aqueous alcohol and separating the insoluble alkaline earth metal sulphate.ALSO:Therapeutic compositions for oral, parenteral and topical use comprises one or more tetracycline alkyl sulphates in which the alkyl radical contains 1 to 4 carbon atoms and a pharmaceutical excipient. Alkali metal hexametaphosphates may be present to prolong the blood level of the antibiotic. Examples are given of tablets and granules containing tetracycline butylsulphate and sodium hexametaphosphate.
