Abstract

1,002,961. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. hot. 25, 1961 [April 11, 19611, No. 38208/61. Heading H1D. A high-pressure metal-vapour electric discharge lamp 11 comprises a tubular envelope 12 of refractory light-pervious material, e.g. quartz or alumina, a pair of slender tungsten electrodes 17 within and adjacent respective ends of the envelope, and a quantity of vaporizable metallic iodide in the envelope, the envelope being proportioned for operation of the lamp with a wall loading in excess of 40 watts per square centimeter. The lamp is preferably of the type described in Specification 945,762. The envelope contains an ionizable starting gas, e.g. xenon at a filling pressure of 50 mms. of Hg. The operating pressure is 5 atmospheres and suitable metal iodides are gallium, indium or thallium iodide or mixtures of these, preferably with an excess of iodine. Reference is also made to the use of iodides of tin, antimony, sodium, titanium and cadmium with or without the addition of mercury iodide.
