Apparatus for drying garments, comprising a drying chamber 10 containing a rotary perforated basket 16, a distributer 44 disposed adjacent the basket and having openings 46 proximate the surface thereof and a combustion chamber 48 disposed vertically, externally of the drying chamber 10, is characterized in that mono-port gas burners 56 are disposed below the lower open end of the chamber 48 with their upper ends at the entrance to the chamber, a gas shut-off valve is provided for the burners, the upper end of the combustion chamber 48 communicates with the distributer 44 and in that the combustion chamber is of sufficient length to effect complete combustion before entry into the distributer. The basket 16 is mounted for rotation on the forward end of a shaft 18 which is supported in the rear wall of the chamber 10 by bearings 20. A motor M drives the shaft 18 through a system of pulleys. Baffles (not shown) control the flow of drying air around the basket. A shroud 64 surrounds the combustion chamber 48 and defines with the chamber a passage for the intake of air directly into the distributer 44. An exhaust fan 72 operated by the motor M draws air from the drying chamber at a rate greater than that at which the drying air leaves the combustion chamber 48 to ensure that any leakage takes place into the box. A pressure-sensitive device comprises a hinged damper disposed on the outside of the chamber 10 over an opening in the wall. A rise in pressure within the chamber causes the damper to swing open and in turn operate the gas valve to shut off the gas burners. When the pressure has been corrected the valve is opened and the burners are lit automatically by a pilot. The flow of gas is thermostatically controlled so that with a reduction in moisture content of the garments the input temperature of the air is reduced.
