Abstract
Aldehydes and/or alcohols are prepared by reacting a compound having an olefinic linkage with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a complex of a transition metal having an atomic number from 23 to 32, 40 to 51, or 57 to 84 with at least one molecule containing trivalent phosphorus, arsenic or antimony and separating the resultant mixture while maintaining a protective medium of at least one olefine. The olefine used as the protective medium is preferably a C2-C8 alkene. The preferred catalysts are those containing cobalt as the transition metal and a phosphine such as tri-n-butyl-phosphine or triphenylphosphine as the molecule of the trivalent element. Preferably the feed comprising the olefinic compound to be hydroformulated, carbon monoxide and hydrogen is mixed with recycle and/or fresh catalyst and reacted, e.g. at 300-700 p.s.i.g. and 150-180 DEG C. The product is separated from the catalyst while maintaining a substantial concentration of protective olefine. It is convenient that the protective olefine should be the same as the one being hydroformylated.
