Abstract

1,002,292. Cartridge-actuated tools. IMPEX-ESSEN VERTRIEB VON WERKZEUGEN G.m.b.H. May 1, 1963 [May 7, 1962; Sept. 21, 1962; May 16, 1962; Oct. 22, 1962; June 1, 1962], No. 17250/63. Heading B4C. A cartridge-actuated tool for driving bolts into structures comprises a piston 108 movable in a barrel 110, the piston having a chamber 108<SP>1</SP> into which extends a hollow projection 114<SP>1</SP> of a cartridge holder 114 longitudinally displaceable relative to a muzzle-piece 101 adapted to receive a bolt. The barrel is slidable in a sleeve 106 and normally urged by a spring 105 into its rearmost position, the barrel being prevented from relative rotation with the sleeve by means of a pin-and-groove device 111, 112; the sleeve 106 is slidable in a forward casing member 104 and prevented from relative rotation with the latter by a pin-and-groove device 106a, 109. The firing pin mechanism for the tool is housed in a rear casing member 119, and comprises a firing pin 122 secured in a block 121 which is fixed in a slidable member 125 mounted in a rear casing member 119. The rear casing is locked to the forward casing by a screw-thread or bayonet joint shown and the barrel is similarly locked to the member 125 provided with a spring-loaded blocking member 131. The forward end of the barrel sleeve 106 is provided with the muzzle piece 101 having jaws 101<SP>11</SP>, one jaw being fitted with a tube 102 for frictionally gripping the guide washer 100<SP>1</SP> of a bolt 100. In operation, in order to fire the bolt into a structure the muzzle is pressed against the latter thereby, via the barrel and member 125, compressing a spring 131 and also, by means of the blocking member engaging with the end of an ignition piston 135, compress a firing spring 133. By depressing a trigger 128, the blocking member is moved so as to align hole 131<SP>1</SP> therein with the piston 35 which under the action of the spring 113, strikes the firing pin 122, the resultant explosion then causing the gases in the chamber 108<SP>1</SP> to drive the piston 108 forward to insert the bolt. In order to re-load the tool, the rear casing member 119, which is surrounded by an outer grip 126, is rotated thereby unlocking the bayonet joints and, by pulling the rear casing axially a short distance, the latter is permitted to pivot to the open position as shown in Fig. 10, about a joint 119<SP>11</SP> provided between the barrel and the casing. In the simplified modification shown in Fig. 3, a safety catch 80 is normally held in blocking engagement with a firing plunger 88 but when the muzzle 66 of the tool is pressed against a structure a groove in a blocking member 81 is brought into such position, via rods 82, 83, that the safety catch may be released by finger pressure and thereby permit the firing of the tool. In other modifications the muzzle member is adjustably mounted by being threaded on to the barrel or the barrel casing. In these modifications the mechanism for preventing the safety catch from being released until the tool is pressed against the structure are not provided.
