Abstract
Isocyanuric acid derivatives are prepared by polymerizing one or more isocyanates in the presence of at least one compound which contains, once or several times in the molecule, an ethyline imine ring of the formula <FORM:1001746/C2/1> in which the radicals R represent hydrogen or aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon atoms which may contain substituent groups or hetero atoms. A tertiary amine is preferably employed as a co-catalyst. However, the compound containing the ethylene imine ring preferably also contains a tertiary aliphatic amino group. The polymerization is preferably stopped by adding an organic or inorganic acid, acid chloride or acid anhydride in a stoichiometric quantity, calculated on the catalyst and the co-catalyst, or in excess of this quantity. The activity of the catalysts used may be enhanced by the presence of N-substituted carbamic acid esters, which may be produced in situ by the addition of an alcohol to the reaction mixture. Specified starting materials include alkyl, allyl, carboalkoxyalkyl, chloroalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, tetrahydrobenzyl, aryl, chloroaryl, nitroaryl, hydroxyalkylaryl and cycloalkyl isocyantes; alkylene, arylene, cycloalkylene and diphenylene ether diisocyanates; aryl and triarylalkyl triisocyanates; phosphoric acid tris-(4-isocyanatophenyl ester); 1-methyl-3,5,6-chlorbenzene-2,4-diisocyanate and 3,31 - diisocyanato - 4,41 - dimethyl diphenyl uretdione.
