Abstract
1,001,618. Acrylonitrile polymer films. FMC CORPORATION. Aug. 27, 1962 [Nov. 20, 1961 (2)], No. 46973/64. Divided out of 1,001,617. Heading B5B. A solution of 5% to 25% by weight of an interpolymer of at least 50% by weight of acrylonitrile and at least one other monomer copolymerizable therewith, in a solvent comprising a lower dialkyl amide (as defined) of a lower fatty acid (as defined), nitromethane, acetone or mixtures thereof, is formed into a film, which is coagulated in a bath comprising 15% to 90% of a lower dialkyl amide of a lower fatty acid and water at - 10‹ to +10‹ C., washed with a butyl alcohol or water, and dried at 100‹ to 140‹ C. " Lower dialkyl amide " is defined as an amide of which each alkyl group contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms. " Lower fatty acid " is defined as a fatty acid containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms. Specified monomers copolymerizable with acrylonitrile include acrylic and methacrylic acids and their ethers and esters; vinyl ester, ethers and ketones; halogenated vinyls; 2-vinyl pyridine ; styrene and substituted styrenes; methacrylonitrile, isobutene, butadiene, and itaconic and fumaric acids and their esters. Many fatty acid dialkyl amides are specified, the preferred compound being dimethyl formamide. The washing of the film after coagulation is preferably effected at- 10‹ to +30‹ C. for 15 to 120 seconds. The film is preferably biaxially stretched while drying. In the examples, polymer solutions are cast on to glass plates, which are then immersed in the coagulating bath. The films are dried either on the plate or clamped into frames.
