A butterfly valve comprises a cylindrical body 1 with a seating ring mounted therein and a blade 3 pivoted in the body, the seating ring consisting of a ring 6 of rubber or other resilient material with a frusto-conical inner peripheral surface against which the blade seals and a rigid backing ring 7 firmly secured to and supporting the rubber ring. The two rings may be secured together by bonding and the periphery of the blade is polished.
