Abstract
An a -cyanoacrylate adhesive which comprises one or more a -cyanoacrylate monomers <FORM:1000665/C3/1> where R1 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 16 carbon atoms is employed to bond surfaces of articles, there being present at least one epoxide or diepoxide which acts as an activator. The epoxide or diepoxide is applied either directly or as a solution in an inert volatile solvent, the concentration of epoxide or diepoxide in the solution being 1 to 100% based on the total weight of the solution, to at least one of the surfaces to be bonded and the a -cyanoacrylate adhesive is then applied to at least one of the surfaces and the surfaces are then brought into bondings contact. Preferably, the epoxide compounds have one of the general formulae <FORM:1000665/C3/2> or <FORM:1000665/C3/3> where R1 is hydrogen, alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, alicyclic or a combination thereof; R2 is an alkylene, alkylidene or a substituted derivative thereof and R3 is an alkylene or substituted alkylene. Preferably up to 25% by weight of the total adhesive composition is comprised of a polymeric thickener such as a polyacrylate, polymethacrylate or cellulose ester. A plasticizer may also be added. In the examples, various surfaces are bonded together, the cyanoacrylate adhesive comprising methyl a -cyanoacrylate, polymethylmethacrylate and dimethyl sebacate and the epoxide being selected from butadiene monoxide; limonene monoxide; styrene oxide; 3,4-epoxy-6-methylcyclohexylmethyl - 3,4 - epoxy - 6 - methylcyclohexane carboxylate; octylene oxide and the bisglycidyl ether of 4,4-isopropylidene-bis-phenol.
