Abstract

A process for the manufacture of cellular polyurethane materials from a reaction mixture comprising an organic polyisocyanate, a hydroxyl -group containing polymer and water as a gas generating agent, comprises introducing the reaction mixture into a mould, the volume of which is less than that of the cellular polyurethane which would be formed if free expansion were permitted, allowing the mixture to react and expand in order to fill and be substantially wholly contained by the mould, the excess gas being allowed to escape therefrom, the reaction mixture then being allowed to cure, thus forming a cellular polyurethane material within the mould. The volume of the mould is preferably from 2 to 80% of the volume of the cellular polyurethane which would be formed if free expansion were permitted. Hydroxyl-group containing substances used in the examples include a glycerol/propylene oxide condensate and pentaerythritol modified polydiethylene adipate having a hydroxyl content of 2%.ALSO:A process for producing a composite article comprises lining, wholly or partially, a mould with a textile, plastics or other material to which the reaction mixture, which is to produce cellular polyurethane material, adheres. The reaction mixture which is an organic polyisocyanate, a hydroxyl-group containing polymer and water as a gas generating agent is introduced into the mould, the volume of which is less than that of the cellular polyurethane which would be formed if free expansion were permitted, allowed to react and expand in order to fill and be substantially wholly contained by the mould, the excess gas being allowed to escape therefrom and is then allowed to cure, thus forming a cellular polyurethane material within the mould. The volume of the mould is preferably from 2-80% of the volume of the cellular polyurethane which would be formed if free expansion were permitted. Hydroxyl-group containing substances used in the examples include a glycerol/propylene oxide condensate and pentaerythritol modified polydiethylene adipate having a hydroxyl content of 2%. Lining material specified is duckcloth.
