Abstract

1,000,273. Toys; animating figures. R. G. BAULARD-COGAN. Nov. 8, 1961 [Nov. 9, 1960], No. 40033/61. Headings A6M and A6S. The invention comprises a method of animating a flexible toy and the flexible toy. The method comprises injecting or expelling a fluid into or from flexible pockets provided within the body of the toy and contained in partly open rigid or semi rigid envelopes, the consecutive deformation of the pockets being guided by the pockets determining the deformations or movements of the toy. The head of the hollow flexible body 1 comprises a rigid spherical eyeball 8 within an apertured envelope 6 of semi rigid material containing four inflatable pockets 9 to 12 supplied with fluid from a source through tubes 9a to 12a to control the opening of the eyes and their sideways movements. The position of the eyeball is controlled by a screw 13. The lips 15,16 are operated by supplying fluid to a pocket 24 held in the compressed condition by an elastic band 29 and attached to plates 25, 26 connected to the ends of pivoted levers 17,18 secured to the lips. The facial expression is controlled by supplying fluid to a pocket 35 connected by a rod 32 with the pocket 24. A flexible connection between the pocket 24 and rod 32 allows the neck to twist. Fluid supplied to a pocket 40 ejects the tongue 39 from an envelope 38. Fluid is supplied by tube 44 to a cheek pocket 43 and to simulate breathing fluid is supplied to a pocket 45. The arm is straightened by supplying fluid to an upper arm pocket 48 and the fingers are straightened by supplying fluid to a pocket 53 connected to the fingers by cables or rods 56 to 56<SP>111</SP>. The tubes may be connected by a plug connector 60 to a connector 61 outside the body fitted with a control unit having a number of flexible operating bulbs. Alternatively the supply of fluid to the tubes may be remotely controlled by wires,by radio or other means. The toy may be used on the stage or the like.
