Abstract
1,000,238. Tubular heat exchangers; refrigerating. TRANE CO. July 7, 1964 [Aug. 28, 1963], No. 27966/64. Headings F4H and F4S. A shell and tube heat-exchanger 10, Fig. 1 e.g. the generator of an absorption refrigeration system, comprises floating tube spacers 44 di s posed between inlet and outlet headers 25 and 2 arranged to maintain the tubes 24 in space # apart relationship. The tubes are rigidly fixed between tube end plates 16 and 20 and held in p position by fixed tube supports 40 disposed between the floating tube spacers. Fig. 3 shows the floating tube spacer 44 resting on a horizontal plate 32 and being restricted in longitudinal movement by guides 50. The floating tube spacers and the fixed tube supports have holes 46 and 42 to contain the tubes. The heating fluid has an inlet 26 and outlet 30, and the heated fluid an inlet 34 with a liquid outlet 36 and vapour outlet 38. When the tubes 24 are heated they expand and the expansion is taken up by the lateral movement of the floating tube spacers forming a sine wave as shown. Fig. 5 (not shown) indicates a modified form of the heat exchanger wherein the spacing between adjacent fixed tube supports is progressively smaller towards the outlet end for the heating fluid.
