Abstract

Methods of encoding information within the base sequence of a nucleic acid molecule other than trough the genetic code are claimed. The embedded information may use a mechanism of Huffman coding and/or error checking, preferably by a parity check or convolutional code. The information may also be embedded in a quaternary code or by the absolute or relative lengths of restriction enzyme cleaved fragments, which preferably form a series of digits in binary or quaternary code. Also claimed are methods of decoding such information and host cells containing polynucleotides with such embedded information.
