Description
The present invention relates to a pedal vehicle pedal assembly. It finds particularly advantageous, but not exclusive, applications in the field of bicycles or other similar machines. In the context of the invention, the term bicycle must be understood in its most general sense. It includes in particular the terms bicycle proper, racing bike, tricycle, quadricycle, mountain bike, pedal boat, wheelchair for people with reduced mobility. In general, the invention applies to any type of vehicle or machine driven by a mechanism involving a pedal assembly, whether intended for adults or children (toy). To clarify the ideas, we will consider in the following the case of the preferred application of the invention, namely a conventional bicycle, without this limiting in any way the scope of the invention.
Currently, cranksets have at least one chainring with a toothed crown that is integral in rotation with a shaft rotating around a fixed pedaling axis and which drives a chain. The latter in turn drives a toothed pinion, integral with a rotation shaft of the rear wheel. This pinion is not necessarily unique, it can be made up of a derailleur equipped with several pinions of different ratios to adapt to the configurations of the terrain. The chainring with a toothed crown is integral with two cranks located symmetrically on either side of the bicycle frame and offset by 180°. The free ends of the cranks are equipped with a screw thread allowing a pedal to be fixed there, free to rotate around a connecting axis. As a result, by exerting thrust forces on the pedals, the cyclist rotates the chainring with a toothed crown, which in turn drives the rear wheel via the chain. This type of crankset has disadvantages, the main one being the symmetrical configuration of the cranks, which have their longitudinal axes aligned. In particular, when a pedal is in the low position (bottom dead center: BDC), its opposite is in the high position (top dead center: TDC). In this position, if the cyclist exerts a downward push on the pedal, it is easy to understand that this push is ineffective since there is no force component rotating the cranks.
Ceci est décrit, par exemple dans le brevet FR 2 584 671, dans la demande de brevet FR 2 742 408 A1, dans la demande US 2004/045401 A ou dans le brevet US 6 367 352 B1.In the current state of the art, there are various solutions to facilitate the passage from top dead center TDC. The most relevant systems use independent cranks and a chainring offset by a cam. Connecting rods provide the connection between the cranks and the chainring. This is described, for example, in patent FR 2 584 671, in patent application FR 2 742 408 A1, in application US 2004/045401 A or in patent US 6 367 352 B1.
In these mechanisms, there are still disadvantages due to the geometry. In fact, the articulation of the plate is obtained by large elements. This is due to the use of an off-center cam; the plate holders rotate around a very narrow bearing and are subjected to significant forces related to off-centering.
The external dimension of the chainring carrier bearings limits the use of small chainrings, the offset of the right crank being too great, which creates an asymmetry of the assembly. This is the result of the use of connecting rods whose thicknesses are added to that of the mechanism. The connecting rods also have the disadvantage of using numerous joints which increase the cumulative play. The joints of the right and left cranks are different, resulting from the design linked to the asymmetry noted above in the text. The crank axle is extended (by a crank pin) to accommodate the offset of the mechanism on the right side.
The crankset according to the invention overcomes these drawbacks. It uses independent cranks, placed on each side of the cycle and articulated on a chainring holder, on the right side, and on a lever, on the left side. The chainring holder and the lever are made integral by means of the crankset axle. These two elements are concentric with the housing axle. The cranks, in the shape of a capital L, use two of the articulations replacing the use of connecting rods. A cam, integral with the housing of the cycle, carries, by means of a bearing, a ring or a ring is housed intended to receive a transmission axle, connecting the cranks with the cams. The invention relates more specifically to a cycle crankset as defined by the claims, and has the purpose of eliminating the top dead center (TDC) in the complete pedaling movement.
