The invention relates to a method for determining the position thetarot and the speed Omegarot of a rotor of a synchronous electric machine, said electric machine being provided with at least one means for measuring the position of said rotor, and a means for measuring the voltages and the currents of the phases of said electric machine. For said method, the following steps are carried out: the position thetam and the speed Omega m of said rotor of said electric machine are measured by said position-measuring means; the voltages um and the currents im of the phases of said electric machine are measured by said current and voltage measuring means; the total magnetic flux ϰalphabeta circulating in said electric machine is estimated from the measured voltages um and currents im using a state observer; an estimated position theta and speed Omega of said rotor of said electric machine are derived from the total magnetic flux; and the position thetarot and the speed thetarot of said rotor of said electric machine are considered to be equal to the estimated position theta and speed Omega, or are considered to be equal to the position thetam and speed Omegam measured on the basis of the speed Omegarot .
