Abstract
The method involves determining a set point position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve (36) of an internal combustion engine (4) of a vehicle (2), and determining variation of an allowable position of the valve, where the variation of the position does not drive significant deterioration of operation of the engine, and is function of operation parameters of the engine. A control signal with amplitude oscillating about the set point position is determined, where the amplitude of the oscillation is equal to the determined variation of the position. The signal is applied on the valve. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a controller for controlling an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve of an internal combustion engine (2) an internal combustion engine comprising a flowmeter.
