Des tourbillons apparaissent, leurs existences sont nuisibles et créent un gaspillage d'énergie dû à la traînée. Un sillage, une masse d'eau reste accrochée au bateau. La zone tourbillonnaire provoquée par le décrochement agit comme une couche limite laminaire, ce qui réduit la traînée. Ce même décrochement résiste à un décrochage bien au-delà de 12°. Ce redan, créant une zone tourbillonnaire qui agit comme une couche limite laminaire, réduit la traînée, augmente la portance et augmente le décroche bien au-delà de 12°.
