Description

The invention relates to oil filters for internal combustion engines, filters associated with devices for cooling said oil. It relates more particularly to those of these filters, which are intended to be mounted on a motor housing, comprising on the one hand, a tank assembled at its base on the housing and containing a heat exchanger traversed by both the oil cooling and cooling water, said tank being provided with an internal oil discharge duct; and on the other hand, an oil filter comprising a filter cartridge whose outer wall communicates with the oil outlet of the exchanger. In known embodiments of such filter-exchanger assemblies, the cylindrical filter housing is independent. of the tank and the filter cartridge is locked immovably (see EP0200809). Under these conditions, a replacement of the filter cartridge requires a global replacement of the entire housing and its contents. In other known embodiments, the respective locations of the exchanger and the filter are dissociated and their large protective housings consume too much space to be able to integrate them in the engine compartment. The invention aims, in particular, to make much more compact and economical integration in question by allowing to replace only the filter cartridge itself.

For this purpose, the filter-exchanger sets of the kind in question according to the invention are essentially characterized in that the filter cartridge is included in the tank. In preferred embodiments, one and / or the other of the following provisions is used: the filter cartridge is traversed by the flow of oil exiting the exchanger; the cylindrical filter cartridge is mounted in the tank so that its axis of revolution is substantially perpendicular to the direction of flow of the oil; the axis of revolution of the filter cartridge is substantially coaxial with the axis of revolution of the internal discharge duct; the cylindrical filter cartridge is capped by an easily removable lid on the opposite side to that of the oil outlet, and whose opening allows easy replacement of said cartridge; and - the heat exchanger is of a type with superimposed plates.

The invention comprises, apart from these main provisions, certain other arrangements which are preferably used at the same time and which will be more explicitly discussed below. In what follows, a preferred embodiment of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in a manner of course not limiting. Figure 1 of this drawing shows in axial section a filter-exchanger assembly established according to the invention. Figure 2 shows on a larger scale a plate 30 for the flow of water. Figure 3 shows on a larger scale an oil flow plate.

The assembly in question is intended to filter and cool the lubricating oil of an internal combustion engine. It can be assembled at its base on the crankcase of an engine. The assembly consists of a tank 1 in which are alternately mounted water circulation plates 10 as shown in FIG. 2, and oil circulation plates 11 as shown in FIG. Plate stack 10 and 11 constitute a plate type heat exchanger 2 in which water is the coolant and oil is the fluid to be cooled. In a water flow plate 10 shown in FIG. 2, the flow direction of the water is indicated by an arrow in dashed fine lines. It can be seen that the water enters a plate 10 through the inlet 7, circumscribes the partition 15 made by the internal discharge duct 3 of the upper and lower plates, and is then discharged through the outlet 9. oil flow plate 11 shown in Figure 3, the direction of flow of the oil is marked by an arrow in solid straight lines. It can be seen that the oil 20 enters a plate 11 through the inlet 8 and discharges directly into the internal discharge duct 3. This duct 3 is made through the stacks of the plates 10 and 11 thus forming a cylinder that can accommodate a filter cartridge 5 in its soul. The inner cylindrical duct 3 and the filter cartridge 25 are such that their respective revolving axes (X3) and (X5) are substantially coaxial. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 1, the direction of flow of the oil in a plate 11 is represented by an axis (H) in narrow fine lines. The flow direction of the oil is such that it is effected in the plane of the plate 11. The axis of revolution (X5) of the filter cartridge 5 and 2908816 4 the axis (H) of flow of the oil in a plate 11 are substantially perpendicular. The oil filter 4 of the heat exchanger 2 is therefore included in the internal oil discharge duct 3 passing through the stack of the plates 10 and 11 of the exchanger 2. The oil arriving in the duct evacuation 3 then passes through the filter cartridge 5 inserted in said duct. Once filtered, the oil is discharged through the outlet 6. The advantages of integrating an oil filter 4 directly into the plate heat exchanger 2 are to reduce the pressure drop in the oil circuit, to reduce the bulk of the heat exchangers and filters implanted distinctly; and reduce the number and length of the pipes. On the other hand, the oil filter 4 comprises a cover 12 for capping the filter cartridge 5 so that only the cartridge can be replaced by easily removing the cover 12. Finally, the plates 10 and 11 may have ribs or ribs. elements for improving the passage of the fluid in order to limit the pressure drop or to increase the heat exchange. They can also be equipped with baffles to improve filter wetting or heat exchange.
