Abstract

The system uses planned route information to enable optimum fuel consumption and pollutant levels. The management system provides control for the drive system (1) of a vehicle, which may include two different types of motor or engine (11,12) operated selectively and using different source of energy. The system operates in conjunction with a navigational aide which is used to determine a particular route for the vehicle, and provides control parameters for the elements (2,3,4) which control the vehicle drive. The control (5) may be optimized in terms of fuel consumption, or in terms of pollution. Alternatively it may be optimized in terms of performance. The engines used may include one which is either petrol or diesel, and one electric motor. The electric motor may be used in towns to cut down pollution, whilst the diesel one may be used on open roads for fuel economy.
