Abstract

Sterile male Burley tobacco plant variety obtained using a matrix produced from a <<White Burley>> variety rendered a sterile male and from a pollinating agent selected from a White Burley population, the said variety being in the applicant's catalogue under the name <<White Burley>> No. 3. The said variety has the range of characteristics below: - usual shape resulting from growth: cylindrical - cone-shaped; - colour of the leaves: pale green; - shape of the leaves: oval-elliptical at the base; elliptical-lanceolate in the middle, lanceolate at the apex; - insertion of the leaves into the stem: at an open angle at the base, at an acute angle in the middle and at a very acute angle at the apex; - number of usable leaves: 28 to 32; - flower: sterile male; - good productivity; - very good commercial characteristics. i

Description

The present invention relates to a novel variety of tobacco plant
Burley male sterile, endowed with good productivity and very good characteristics for marketing.

The denomination proposed for the said variety is "C.ll-3".

The present variety is a sterile male F1 species, obtained in 1982 from genetic material selected by the applicant, using the matrix obtained from a long-introduced White Burley variety from the United States, bred and selected. in
Italy by isogeny (asexual reproduction of the anthers), then treated to become sterile male and using a selected pollinating agent, since 1978, from a Burley population of American origin, characterized by numerous biotypes having for particularity a large number of leaves and a low tendency to produce suckers.

In the general catalog of seeds of the applicant, said pollinating agent appears under the name "Burley Blanc nO 3".

This variety is clearly distinguishable from any other known variety; in particular compared to the sterile male varieties currently existing in Italy (more particularly in Campania), by the following points
- for the power of growth and the precocity of the maturation it is between the "SEMATI 03-C" and the "CLAYTON C.103"
- for the quality of its products, this variety is on par with the various "Burley blanc" (White Burley) varieties which are currently cultivated in Italy, both with a density of 32,000 to 36,000 plants per hectare, and with a density of 20,000 to 25,000 plants per hectare.

Agronomic characteristics
Repeated cultivation trials, continued during the last three years, have shown that this variety can be exploited both with a normal planting density (32,000 to 36,000 plants per hectare) as in an American-type crop with a density of 20,000 to 25,000 plants per hectare picking and processing leaves or collecting and processing whole plants.

In both cases the present variety showed a behavior markedly superior to that of the variety "White Burley Line 21" (with hermaphrodite flowers) of American origin, both from the point of view of productivity, due to the greater number of usable leaves on each plant than due to a lower susceptibility to viral infections.

Product commercial characteristics
Under normal growing conditions, this variety provides valuable products because of their taste characteristics, in particular their taste and aroma, which are different from those of the White Burley Line 21 variety which is grown in different regions of italy.

Burley tobacco variety produced from a sterile male F1 obtained by using on the one hand a matrix produced from a variety White Burley of distant American origin, bred and selected in Italy by isogeny, then treated to become sterile male, and on the other hand a pollinating agent selected from a population of White Burley of American origin characterized by numerous biotypes producing a large number of leaves and having only a slight tendency to form suckers, said pollinating agent appearing in the general seed catalog of the applicant under the name "White Burley" no. 3, said variety of tobacco being characterized by the set of characteristics below - usual form of plant growth: cylindrical - cone-shaped; - leaf lobe: smooth with slightly jagged edges - leaf color: pale green turning to green-yellow with ripening - shape of the leaf: oval-elliptical for the lower floors, elliptical - lanceolate at mid-height, lanceolate for the top leaves - insertion of the leaves into the stem: at a very open angle on the lower floors, at an acute angle at mid-height and at a very acute angle for the top leaves; - number of usable sheets: 28 to 32 - flower: sterile mile, with the lobes of the corolla united at the base, somewhat apiciflora, irregular, with a dark pink color finely veined - good productivity, very good commercial characteristics. 2. Burley tobacco variety according to claim 1, characterized in that it has substantially the characteristics described and illustrated above.
