Abstract

At least one of its parts is coated by any known means with a layer of titanium nitride which is then ground so that it has a perfectly polished surface. This part may preferably be the ball of a femoral prosthesis.

Description

It is known that certain bone prostheses, such as the femoral ones, comprise two parts assembled to each other by wedging. Thus in such prostheses, there is a rod forcibly engaged in the medullary canal of the femur and which carries a conical tip engaging in wedging in a bore of the same shape made in a ball intended to replace the head in the femur when it has been removed due to damage.

The stem of the prosthesis is generally made of metal, for example stainless steel, chrome-cobalt steel, because these alloys have very good resistance. As for the ball, it is preferably metallic, in order to obtain a very good mechanical wedging between its bore and the conical end of the prosthesis stem. We are practically led to use a femoral stem and a ball of the same metal, otherwise we create a bi-metallic assembly which risks generating harmful battery effects to the assembly between the two parts.

As titanium has a modulus of elasticity closer to that of bone than other alloys, that it is well tolerated by the body and that it has a relatively lower density by weight than these alloys, we have tendency to use it more and more to make the stems of femoral prostheses. As a result of what has just been said above, we are practically obliged to also manufacture the titanium ball. However, this embodiment has a drawback in that this metal does not have a very good coefficient of friction with polyethylene, a material used to make the cup with -which the ball cooperates in the artificial cup.

l'invention a pour objet de diminuer de manière importantè le coefficient de frottement entre une boule réalisée en titane et la cupule en polyéthylène destinée à la recevoir, tout en assurant à la périphérie de ladite boule une dureté importante. the object of the invention is to significantly reduce the coefficient of friction between a ball made of titanium and the polyethylene cup intended to receive it, while ensuring at the periphery of said ball a high hardness.

For this purpose, the ball is covered with a layer of titanium nitride which has a very high surface hardness, so that it eliminates to a very great extent the wear as well as the friction after it has been carefully polite.

This coating can also be used on the stem of the prosthesis or any other implant when we want to either increase the hardness or have a neutral layer from the biological point of view, since titanium nitride is particularly well tolerated by the body, as mentioned above. If the prosthesis stem is coated with such a layer of titanium nitride, it has excellent surface hardness and avoids waste due to friction between said stem and the femur during micro-movements which appear at this level.

It is of course also possible to deposit a titanium nitride directly on parts made of chromium-cobalt steel or stainless steel for the same reasons.

The titanium nitride coating is carried out in the known manner under a nitrogen atmosphere by the C.V.D. or P.V.D. Once the deposit has been made, it is essential to perform a significant running-in of its surface which is too rough in the raw state for the intended application. On the contrary, after the running-in in question, the surface of the titanium nitride layer is perfectly polished.

It should moreover be understood that the above description has been given only by way of example and that it in no way limits the field of the invention from which one would not depart by replacing the execution details described by all other-equivalent
