Abstract

Mouldings or coatings of glass fibre reinforced polyester resin are given a high gloss finish using a shiny polyester film of high strength and moisture resistance (as used for tracing purposes by drawing offices) to line the mould or as an interface via which a cast or laid-up surface is consolidated and smoothed by a roller. After the reinforced resin has hardened, the polyester film is peeled off to expose the surface of the reinforced resin or the gel coat thereon. For application to an exposed surface or gel coat, as distinct from lining a mould cavity, the glossy polyester film is pref. at least 125 microns thick. Opt. the glossy film is self-adhesive on one face to help secure it in position on a support such as a mould surface. The polyester film does not adhere to the resins used as gel coats or matrix resins for fibre-reinforced thermosetting polyesters.
