Abstract

The mast for a sailing ship is sited in positions other than on the longitudinal axis of the vessel, and connected by cross beams (4) between heads. There may be single masts (1) in starboard and port positions which may be in conjunction with conventional centre mast. Multi-mast arrangements may use additional longitudinal (5) and diagonal (6) connecting beams which may cantilever out (7) beyond the joints. The connecting beams may also form tracks for runners to which sail yards are attached, the masts being used for a single or multiple hull vessels for pleasure or commerce and with rigid or flexible sails.

Description

This presentation covers the different uses of wind using masts and sails, in particular on boats.
Up to now, the masts have had their base fixed in file in - @ i @ nne on the fore-aft axis of the ships. @ Eaupré, mesènes, grand-mas, mizzen, in the case of the three mats clessioue, by exem -ple.This arrangement requires that the masts are very

large, in order to have a maximum airfoil.

The present invention resides in the creation and use of masts erected on the bridge, other than on the front-rear axis d of the concrete. The most common case of use of these d--axed mats being that, or , being used in pairs, one of them is located on the port side, the other on the starboard side, perpendicular to the axis of the boat.

According to the invention, this arrangement of the masts in pairs or multiples of pairs makes it possible to reduce the height of the masts for the same wing, or to 'increase the latter for masts of the same height.

-sser.
These mats can be used as is, but according to a first variety, they can be accompanied by transverse crosspieces connecting the two mats of each pair to their top. According to a second variant, the pairs can be connected to each other at their top by crosspieces longitudinal and diagonal, and these, according to a third variant, if required
-ssing.

this use of masts by pairss can be applied to all mobiles powered by the wind acting on flexible or rigid sails, by means of masts, in particular to all ships. According to the invention, no only already existing sails but specially designed sails can be used
according to this invention, the various sleepers ri @ iles are called, especially in the commercial navigation, to be used for the circulation of mobile devices integral with yards or the like, allowing by this means the movements of sails in the wind.

The sheet of three (3) drawings @ annexed shows three of the possible cases of application of the invention.

These last ones crossing in
In all possible cases of sleepers, these can be extended if necessary in% beyond the masts.

The inv @ ntion can be used for both pleasure and commercial navigation. It is used for monohulls and all varieties of multihulls.

It will prove useful whenever you want to increase the airfoil or decrease the height of the dishes, and more generally when you want to exploit the wind dens the maximum Corlitions.

In the case of small boats, it will mainly be useful for
@ u @ lie their speed. In the commercial navigation, it will be in addition, a (improved) means to save energy. Being given, in this last case, the importance of the masses to move, therefore the resistances to be overcome, it seems that reducing the height of the masts, without thereby reducing the airfoil, on the one hand, and erecting fixed structures allowing the maneuvering of the flocks, on the other hand, would be two good means for get there.
