Abstract

A three-dimensional puzzle consists of a hollow cube (1) of transparent material which contains 26 small cubes of equal size. The dimensions of the small cubes are such that 27 of them would fill the hollow cube so that with 26 small cubes there is an empty space equal to the volume of one small cube. Seven of the small cubes are joined together to form a three-dimensional cross and the remaining cubes are free to slide around this cross. The outer faces of the cubes in the cross are placed in the centres of respective faces of the large cube. The object of the puzzle is to place the mobile cubes in random order and then to shuffle them around, by tilting the hollow cube in the required direction, so that the cubes are re-arranged in a specified order. The faces of the cubes are coloured differently or have numbers or letters marked on them to indicate their correct orientation and position within the puzzle.
