Abstract

A powdered or granulated product such as animal feed is able to flow under effects of gravity from a storage reservoir above a point of delivery. An Archimedes screw in a tube allows a constant amount to be delivered while avoiding blockage of the tube. A conical reservoir opens at the base into a vertical tube containing an Archimedes screw mounted on a vertical shaft. The shaft passes through the reservoir and is retained in position by a stop supported by a bracket across the reservoir. The screw pitch is chosen to suit the material so that it does not slide under its own weight. Rotation of the screw is by an electric motor and reduction gear or by traction of a cable wound around a pulley on the screw shaft. The number of turns determines material quantity and is determined by a time switch or by length of cable pulled.
