Abstract

A telecopier system of reading in numerical information which avoids the need for such information to be input through a keyboard uses codes carrying the numerical information as successive lines of dots. Each line of dots has a preset number and forms an ideogramme. The card is scanned in successive scan lines (1a) a read head which produces a logic '1' signal for each shaded point scanned and determines whether or not the point is part of a dot (111, 112...) or a blemish (2) by comparing the number of successive logic '1' signals with a minimum required number. Scanning of a single row of dots is made in a preset number of head line scans, the scanning of a line terminating when a head line scan detects no dots. The total number of dots in the dot line is then easily calculated accurately irrespective of the blemishes on the card.
