Abstract

Gas-liq. contact device is formed from a series of phase contacting zones with subsequent sepn. zones. The liq. inlet zone has a series of individual elements which have a V cross section and inclined perforated side walls. These take liq. from a downcomer and entrain it in the gas stream. The gas and liq. then flow in counter-current through the contact zone which consists of a series of perforated plate elements of V section arranged across the flow area. The vapour leaves the contact zone and then enters the sepn. zone. Here the liq. is disentrained by separator elements consisting of covered V shaped devices mounted in rows across the cross sectional area. The liq. is taken by downcomer to the contact section below and the vapour proceeds up into the contact section above. For use in distillation, rectification, absorption, desorption or other liq./vapour mass transfer operations. Provides higher column throughputs and superficial operating velocities than conventional columns, more intense mass transfeR, low pressure drop and simple construction.
