Abstract

A reforming catalyst system comprises (1) 1-100% of a composite (I) consisting of (a) up to 25 wt.% of a crystalline alumino silicate zeolite of controlled acidity, selected from ZSM-5, ZSM-35 and TEA-mordenite, (b) >=75 wt.% carrier, (c) 0.01-2 wt.% a Pt-gp. metal opt. mixed with other metals, and (d) 0.01-3 wt.% of a halide, and (2) 0-99% of a conventional reforming catalyst (II) comprising (a) a carrier, (b) 0.01-2 wt.% of a Pt-gp. metal opt. mixed with other metals, and (c) 0.01-3 wt.% of a halide. The system has a K factor, defined as (Relative acid activity of (I)) x (Vol.% of (I)) + (Relative acid activity of (II)) x (Vol.% of (II) relating to isomerisation of o-xylene to m-and p-xylenes, of 1.5-15, pref. 2-5. The catalyst system is more active and much more resistant to ageing than conventional reforming catalysts, and at given conditionsr yields higher octane prods. It is esp. useful for reforming naphtha charge stocks, such as virgin or cracked naphthas and partially reformed naphthas.
