Abstract

Prodn. of thymosine fraction 3 is carried out by (a) coarsely mincing bovine thymus, (b) suspending in 0.15 M NaCl soln. (c) filtering in a filter press, (d) flash heating the filtrate to 80-85 degrees C by injecting steam at superatmospheric pressure, (e) maintaining at 80-85 degrees C for 1-2 min. to denature unwanted proteins without denaturing the thymosinc, (f) rapidly cooling, (g) filtering off the ppte. (h) concentrating the filtrate to half vol., (i) adding sufficient acetone to ppte. the thymosine fraction 3, and (j) recovering the ppte. The prod. is useful for preparing pure thymosine which stimulates the proliferation of lymphoid tissue and T cells ad thus increases immunity to infectious processes. Coarse mincing reduces fat release, flash heating reduces thymosine degradation, and conc. in step (h) reduces the amt. of acetone required in step (i).
