Abstract

The instrument, which has the advantage of being compact, easy to calibrate, of variable range and simple and cheap to mass produce, is particularly suitable as bathroom scales. The weight value can be displayed directly by an electrical method. The mechanism translates the vertical weight acting on the top platform (1) into a horizontal force in a stiff ribbon (9). Knife edged members (3, 4) allow the assembly to pivot as a parallelogram about bearing points (16, 17, 26, 27) in shoulders on the top and bottom plates. By means of an adjustment screw (11) the angle of inclination (alpha) of the pivoting members can be varied between 30 deg. and 60 deg. thus setting the sensitivity. Strain produced in the anchor sheet (7) by the tension in the ribbon is converted into an electrical signal by strain gauges (18, 19).
