Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of an animal feed in the form of high-volume croquettes, which are particularly suitable for aquatic animals. The animal feed is based on vegetable and/or animal proteins, starch-containing raw materials, fats and/or oils, and additives for flavouring the mixture, fortifying it with vitamins and improving its palatability. The process comprises prescreening and premixing the mixture before it is made into a paste by the vortex method, then after brief residence times of 1-2 minutes at temperatures of 125-150 DEG C, applying a pressure so that 110-130 atü (gauge pressure) are obtained, forcing in steam, subsequently expanding the mixture by means of special-purpose nozzles which are provided with a plurality of minute bores to give high-volume croquettes, drying the resulting croquettes, which have a residual water content of 20-40%, by means of multibelt driers, and adding fat to the dried croquettes by spraying them with liquid fats and/or oils.
