Abstract
A cell for use in measuring oxygen partial pressures in liqs. has a conductive silicon substrate on which an insulating layer of silica is formed. Holes are formed through the silica and metal, e.g. Pt, cathodes are deposited in the holes. An oxygen-permeable membrane, e.g. of PTFE, covers at least the cathodes, and a silver anode, acting as reference electrode, is included. Where the liq. to be measured contains no chloride or other halide ions, the membrane pref. covers both the anode and the cathodes and a layer of a mixt. contg. silver and a silver halide, pref. chloride, is interposed between the silica layer and the membrane. The cell is used for measuring the partial pressure of oxygen in living material, e.g. in blood.
