Abstract

Plastic materials and/or mouldings are irradiated with a thin beam of accelerated particles by building up an electromagnetic field acting transversely to the direction of the radiation to ensure that the thin beam of particles impinges on the object to be irradiated at an angle of 90 degrees. The beam is then diverted within the field. This diversion is effected by displacing the field in direction of a line which is equidistant to the surface of the object to be irradiated. The process is used to raise the m.pt. and improve the mechanical strength of polyethylene and/or mouldings made from it; and for modifying PVC and EVA prods., hardening polyester and acrylic coatings, sterilising medical prods. etc.
