Abstract

The appts for measuring the speed of sedimentation of red blood cells uses a sample of blood placed in a transparent vertical tube. At intervals the distance between the upper meniscus of the plasma and the interface between the clear plasma and plasma concentrated with cells is determined. An infrared source and detector are arranged on opposite sides of the tube, and a beam of IR is transmitted through the sample. The source and sensor are moved parallel to the vertical tube by a threaded shaft on which they are carried. A coder provides a signal representative of the position at which the interface is detected.
