Abstract

When a separator for light and/or suspended matter is pumped out after previous disintegration and vortexing of the layer of precipitated light and/or suspended matter, the total separator content is, according to the invention, kept in a circulating motion, in particular a horizontal rotary motion, which can be generated, for example, by tangentially introduced liquid jets. The circulating motion is highly vortexed preferably in the region of the precipitated layer and free of vortexes in the remaining regions and then simultaneously also effects the disintegration and vortexing of the precipitated layer. For carrying out this process, a separator (1) of circular cross-section with tangential feed pipes (21) or feed nozzles and preferably additional deflection bodies (23) in the bottom region and/or surface region is provided.
