Abstract

Bunches of optical fibres are connected together by using two connection carriers (21). Each holds one of the two bunch ends to be joined together. The connection carriers are made by copying a simple matrix, employing conventional techniques for reproducing diffraction gratings. This matrix is, in turn, made by depositing a thin metal layer on an optically polished plane substrate and by engraving parallel grooves with equal spacing into the metal layer using conventional techniques. All the fibres are placed in channels and are there covered by a block.
