Abstract
Uncured resin impregnated fibreboard is decorated by impressing a grained texture upon the surface and then impregnating the grain pattern with a wet stain before pressing and curing the board to obtain a smooth surface. The stain density simulates the effects of a non planar grain and has enhanced resistance to erasure because of penetration to the roots of the grain pattern prior to being pressed. Method provides simpler and more suitable for continuous board prodn. than processes where decorated smooth sheets are laminated to the board surface during consolidation and curing. It is esp. for producing simulated wood grain effects, using aniline-based dyes sprayed on to a sheet surface previously impressed with a grain pattern by an embossing roll.
