Abstract

A boron cpd. (a) which is insol. in water is added to the mixt. prior to baking. Cpd. (a) is pref. a borate flux which is esp. combined with bones; and the mixt. may also contain Cornish stone. Cpd. (a) is pref. combined with bones by treating the latter with a source (a1) of B2O3followed by calcining. Source (a1) is esp. aq. boric acid or aq. sodium borate. In the pref. process, the gelatine is removed from animal bones, which are then crushed and dipped in an aq. suspension of B2O3 or a cpd. forming H2O3 on calcining. The bones are then calcined to form ash contg. B2O3. The addn. of the B2O3 reduces the baking temp. and/or time and improves the formation of the microcrystalline calcium phosphate phases. The temp. range for baking is increased and savings in fuel are achieved.
