Abstract

The parent patent described equipment for cutting grooves in tyre treads to a depth controlled by a sensor following the contour of the tread surface in front of the cutter. This addition modifies the sensor used to one which controls the depth of cut relative to the level of metallic cord reinforcing plys beneath the tread surface. The depth of cut is automatically adjusted to avoid an excessive depth of cut when machining tyres of differing degrees of previous tread wear.
