Abstract

Valve contains a two part stepped piston (23) whose minor surface (21) is subject to service brake pressure and whose major surface (27) is subject to trailer brake normal pressure. The two piston parts are joined by springs (19, 31) of unequal strength. The stronger of the two springs (31) becomes effective when the throttle valve is cut off. At normal working, storage tank air has uninterrupted passage through the throttle valve to the trailer coupling head, since both piston chambers (15, 30) are without pressure. Should the trailer brake pipe fracture the large piston surface receives pressure to overcome the strong spring (31) and close the throttle passage by means of a plunger (36) and vent the storage tank so that the trailer braking time lag is shortened.
