Abstract
Guard for machine parts esp. shafts is a spring made of strip material wound helically into overlapping turns (8, 9, 10, 11) to define a frusto-cone. The first and last turns are wound without rise to define square ends for the guard. The small dia. end (2) is fitted onto a flanged hollow spigot (4). The large dia. end is fitted loosely into a flanged sleeve (5). The turns at this end are wound for the last outer turn (3) to grip the next turn under tension. This avoids spreading of the last turn in operation.
