Abstract

High speed inspection of bottles used in the food and drink industry is performed using an electronic system to detect opaque foreign bodies. Problems of differentiating between shadows and these bodies are overcome. Bottles (11) on a conveyor (10) are illuminated (13) from behind such that the image is projected onto photosensitive detectors (23). Synchronisation signals are provided by an optical system comprising source (18) and receiver (19). These signals are passed to a digital electronic circuit (24, 26) where rectilinear coordinates of an inspection window are superimposed on the detected image. The data in memories is used selectively per analysis of different physical characteristics of the bottles.
