Abstract
The liq. is agitated in contact with an abundant supply of gas whic contains little or no oxygen and is mainly methane. this contacting takes place in a fermenting vessel from which exhausted gas, contg. CH4 and CO2, is scrubbed in an aq. alkaline liq. to remove CO2. Part of the scrubbed cH4 is recycled to the fermenting vessel with the balance available for industrial use. Liq. sludge drained from the fermenting vessel is decanted to produce a stable, concd. sludge for use as a fertiliser. Part of the clarified liq. from the decanter is pref. used in the aq. laklaine liq. in the scrubbing operation, and some is always discharged from the process. The liq. sludge from the fermenting vessel is pref. degassed prior to decantation. Used for anaerobic, biological purificn. of fermentable effluents, partic. those from abattoirs, food factories, distilleris, chemical factories, dairies, etc. Results in highly efficient reduction of BOD by up to 90%. At incoming BOD values over about 3000 mg oxygen per litre, the ost of treatment by this process is about half that of an activated sludge process.
