Abstract

A vessel is hermetically sealed by hot-welding a cover cut from a strip of suitable material. Before parting off the amount of strip necessary to form the cover, it is cut away at the sides so as to shape it at least partly to fit the vessel opening to be sealed. The cut can be made so as to form a tear-open lug on the cover, and the forward indexing of the strip can be synchronised with the laterall cutting. Synchronising can be effected by a photoelectric cell detecting the lateral cuts made out of the strip. The position of the cell can be adjustable in the travel direction of the strip.
