Abstract

The sheath for a flexible drive cable is made from a continuous spiral (1) formed by coiling a metal strip. Short lengths of plastic tube (3) which act as bearings are inserted inside the coils with a gap (4) between successive lengths equal to one third of the length (5). The spiral (1) is then enclosed in a continuous tube (2) of flexible plastic. With this construction of sheath the cable is guided by the bearings (3) whilst adequate flexibility is ensured by the gaps (4). In addition the gaps (4) act as reservoirs for grease which is prevented from migrating by the bearings (3). The patent also describes a machine for manufacturing the sheath.
